Not Your Usual TMD: Hitting Pause

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is the pause button. You may have noticed that I’ve been a little behind in getting my TMDs out lately.

We’re Taking a Break…

Part of the reason is that we’ve been onboarding a bunch of new EMBODI customers, which is awesome! We’ve been really focused on ensuring their success.

At the same time, someone very important to us—Manal, who many of you have heard me talk about—is going out on maternity leave.

So, for the next several weeks, maybe even a few months, we’re going to hit the pause button on the Tuesday Two Minute Drill.

We’re taking a little time out.

But don’t worry, we’ll be back! We’re just hitting pause for a bit.

Get ready, because when we return, we’ll have a lot of exciting news to share with you all.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. I hope you all are doing well.

Stay tuned for all the exciting updates we have in the works. In the meantime, don’t forget to subscribe to the EMBODI newsletter—we’re sharing a lot of great info there.

Of course, I’m always here if you need me. So reach out if you need anything. Otherwise, talk to you soon!

TMD: Soft Skills, Strong Leadership

TMD: Soft Skills, Strong Leadership

 Two Minute Drill:

Soft Skills, Strong Leadership

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is soft skills. I‘m not sure who the genius was who coined the term “soft skills” because they’re some of the hardest skills we can develop and cultivate as leaders and humans.

The Essential Soft Skills

I was having a great conversation with a young chiropractor last week. He’s growing his practice, he wants to scale it, he’s got two other companies that he’s growing, and he’s on the path to success in his career. I asked him, “Have you had these real conversations, going there with the people on your team to align their goals and visions as well?”

I learned this term, and the skill of “going there” with people on my team and in my life, from my very good friend and mentor, Jeff Lesher.

Going there really helps us understand and create common ground with the people on our team and in our lives—a very important soft skill that will help us get the things we want in life as well.

So, how do we develop these soft skills?

First and foremost, it’s about developing your emotional intelligence. Every single day, we’re having conversations with people in our lives and on our team.

You can reflect on those conversations. Where could I have done better? Especially in those conversations where we have apprehension, where we’re nervous about going there with some topic of conversation with people on our team or in our lives.

How did we do in those conversations? Did we show up with authenticity? Did we show up with curiosity? Reflect on that and then always try to do better the next time. Follow up on those conversations if you feel it’s necessary.

Secondly, it’s about being adaptable. Not every single person relates to the same communication style. Some people like tough love, some people want soft love, and some people might need something completely different.

While I’ve learned to be fair in how I treat my team, I’ve also learned to adapt my communication style and my coaching style to help them get the best results in their lives.

Lastly, it’s about conflict resolution. Now, if we’ve hired the right people, we don’t have much of this in our companies or practices, but sometimes conflicts occur, and we need to be good at conflict resolution.

This is an important soft skill. How do we do that?

First and foremost, you set boundaries. You set the ground rules before even having the conversation. Secondly, you make sure to ask the right questions to find common ground with both people, or the group of people, that you want to talk to, to establish peace and harmony. Then lastly, you let them work out the details for resolution.

They’re coming up with the solution. It’s not a top-down approach; it’s a team approach that finds solutions to the conflict.

So, again, it’s about building our emotional intelligence, being adaptable, and being good at conflict resolution. These are some of the most critical soft skills that we can have as leaders and as humans.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. Have a great week, and I’ll talk to y’all next week.

TMD: Tips for Effective Brand Optimization

TMD: Tips for Effective Brand Optimization

 Two Minute Drill:

Tips for Effective Brand Optimization

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is brand optimization. Back in 2018, we decided to change the name of our clinics, going from Sport and Spine Rehab to Kaizo Health. We did it for a wide variety of reasons, but it was one of the best business decisions we have made.

Brand Refresh

It feels like it was yesterday, but it was six years ago. Now, we realize that we really need to go back and rethink our brand—not do a whole rebrand, but look at how we can optimize what we have in place right now. We’re currently going through a brand optimization process with Renaissance Messaging.

Here’s what I would recommend: When you’re thinking about your brand, you want to make sure it doesn’t get stale, because it can if you don’t make optimizations over time.

There are three steps you can take to optimize your brand without having to go through a complete rebrand:

Step number one is to get feedback. Get feedback from your team, your patients, and your community. Look at all the things you can do to understand how your brand is being perceived in the marketplace.

Again, I highly recommend that you work with a professional to help you do this, but first and foremost, make sure you’re gathering that feedback and doing a critical evaluation of what you’re saying, how you look, and how you’re making people feel in the marketplace.

Second, sit down with your team and, ideally, a branding expert or a branding agency. Go through all that data, analyze it, consolidate it, and then start making strategic decisions about the steps you can take to ensure your brand is experienced in the best possible way.

Lastly, look at your appearance. This might include your website, logo, rack cards, business cards—any collateral you’re putting out into the community. Find ways to optimize that as well.

Without going through a complete rebrand, you can refresh or optimize your brand.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. I hope this was helpful, guys, and I’ll talk to y’all next week.

TMD: Why Medicare Is Failing Patients and What We Can Do About It

TMD: Why Medicare Is Failing Patients and What We Can Do About It

 Two Minute Drill:

Why Medicare Is Failing Patients and

What We Can Do About It

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is Medicare. With Medicare, we know that they only cover chiropractic adjustments of the spine. It is a travesty, a disgrace, driven by politics and bureaucracy.

The Fight for Fairness

There are ways that we can fight it, which I’ll get to in a second. But right now, what’s happening is that private insurers, like large insurance companies, are now telling doctors like us how to diagnose.

Yes, they’re telling us that we should diagnose in a certain hierarchy based on the Medicare guidelines, even though the Medicare guidelines around reimbursement are incredibly restrictive.

They don’t care about the patient’s clinical condition. They don’t care about the clinical hierarchy of diagnosing appropriately. It is the most anti-patient-centered thing.

So, how do we solve this problem? Well, we solve this problem by solving Medicare.

How do we solve Medicare?

We do it by calling relentlessly, emailing relentlessly, and hounding relentlessly our federal elected officials in our districts and getting them to sign on and be a co-sponsor of the Medicare Modernization Act.

You can find out who your representatives are online. You can use this link to contact your legislator //www.acatoday.org/medicare.

You can go to the ACA website or maybe even the ICA website, find this information, and reach out. Tell them they need to reform Medicare because it’s affecting providers, and most importantly, this travesty is affecting patients not even in the Medicare system.

The whole thing’s a disgrace. The only way we get this done is if every single chiropractor does their part to reach out to their elected officials.

Please, reach out, be relentless, and let’s solve this Medicare issue once and for all.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill.

Reach out, be relentless. I’ll talk to y’all next week.

Two Minute Drill:

My Journey with FCA National

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is all things FCA National. I’ll never forget, it was about 15 years ago when Dr. Dana Mackison introduced me to Jen Porro, who is the officer of conventions and program development for the Florida Chiropractic Association. Jen runs the most amazing conventions, and I was lucky that Dana made this introduction.

FCA National

I started teaching rehab, which was called PPLRG—Pain, Posture, Local, Regional, Global Exercise—and I loved it. Then I changed course and started teaching about leadership and practice management. Then I changed course again, and now I’m teaching about all things healthcare and technology.

When it comes to reinventing oneself, finding opportunities to do that can be really, really rewarding for our professional development and careers. Luckily, the FCA National has given me that opportunity.

For all of you out there who are thinking about what is the next great convention that can help you reinvent yourself, check out the FCA National. This is not a commercial; this is all about helping you make a great choice around growing your professional career and personal development, along with all the opportunities that come with it.

So, FCA National, August 15th through the 18th.

And a little plug: I’m doing a two-hour workshop, I’m also going to be on the main stage doing a panel, and I’m doing a second workshop with Dr. Kevin Christie that I’m excited about.

Come to the FCA National, check us out, and let’s reinvent ourselves together.

Have a great day.

TMD: Harnessing the Power of Little Victories

TMD: Harnessing the Power of Little Victories

Two Minute Drill:

Harnessing the Power of Little Victories

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is little victories. I’m here in Boulder, Colorado, at Chautauqua National Park, doing a hike. I’ll tell you, easy hiking in Colorado is not the same as easy hiking on the East Coast, in the DC area—I can promise you that.

Little Victories, Big Impact

Anyway, it’s been a great hike, a beautiful day here, with incredible views. As I’m hiking up this trail, I had to make a decision: do I take the harder route or the easier one?

What do you guys think I picked?

I picked the easier one, and one of the reasons why is because I didn’t want to risk dying of a heart attack or falling while rock climbing. The harder one involved climbing up a vertical wall, which I am not mentally, possibly even physically, prepared for.

I decided to go the easy route, have a little win, and get back to my hotel in one piece, knowing that I’ll be coming back next time and setting myself up to challenge myself with the more difficult hike the next time around.

Whether it’s in business or life, finding little victories and accomplishing important tasks or goals—like going on a hike, bringing in a new doctor, opening a second practice, or any other endeavor you want to pursue—can be very rewarding. Try achieving little victories first along the way. Build your confidence, build your knowledge base, and then you can take on more difficult tasks.

Guys, little victories.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. You guys have a great week, and I will talk to y’all next Tuesday.

Peace.
