TMD: Painful Determination

Two Minute Drill: Painful Determination

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is painful determination. I’m here in South Florida, we moved my parents from California back to Aventura. It was also my mom’s birthday this weekend, so we celebrated her 85th birthday, and everything went really well. They’re all settled in, thanks mainly to my sister who does so much for my parents.

Malka’s Determination

We had a birthday dinner with my parents, my sister, my brother-in-law, and my baby niece Malka. During the dinner, Malka was sitting next to me and we were talking about who was more competitive, me or her, and she challenged me that she was more determined, she was more competitive.

She’s seven years old, and so I said, okay! She’s like, “I’m going to hold up your leg.” So, she extended her two little seven-year-old legs, and I put my right leg on top of her ankles, she worked and she worked through a lot of pain. You’re going to see that video at the end.

What’s really cool is that even though she was experiencing pain, she was determined to win. That inspired me. I was inspired to see how hard she was working and how much pain she endured to achieve her goal.

When it comes to our goals, our personal goals, our fitness goals, our life goals, our professional goals, how much pain are we willing to endure in order to achieve the goal?

Next time I’m in the gym and I did this, this weekend and I’m kind of struggling through that last couple of reps, I’m going to do a couple more. I did a couple more and I’m going to continue to do that.

The Power of One More, as Ed Mylett might say when it comes to doing things related to work or achieving personal financial goals, putting in the effort, and going through some pain in order to achieve the goal.

So, how much pain are you willing to endure? If you can have painful determination, you can win. Just like my seven-year-old baby niece Malka.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. Y’all have a great week and I’ll talk to y’all next week.

TMD: Going There

Two Minute Drill: Going There

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is “going there.” Over the past few days, I’ve had to face some rather tough conversations. Some of these discussions have been challenging for me personally. I feared that I might have made some errors in certain aspects of my work, so I had to ask some tough questions.

Tough Conversations

Did I make an error in judgment? Did I make a decision that may not have been ethically correct? I had to ask these questions to people I respect, individuals directly affected by the decisions I was making. These were not easy discussions, by any means.

I had to have a conversation with someone about whether or not they were going to be staying in my company. It’s a scary conversation. Are you leaving? Are you staying? Why are you leaving if you’re leaving? It’s a very difficult conversation. This person is not someone who was necessarily in my direct report, but someone with whom I’ve worked for almost 10 years.

Then there were other conversations about people not meeting my expectations, about performances and behaviors that I just didn’t appreciate. I had to go there and help these people understand what’s expected, and why these particular behaviors weren’t meeting the mark.

Luckily, some of the conversations I’ve had about the decisions I was making have come back very positive. I’ve learned a lot from them. The conversation I had about a potential employee leaving turned out well – they’re not leaving and they’re very happy in their role, and we talked about more opportunities for them.

Then there’s the conversation about performance expectations. That’s a work in progress. I’ll keep you all posted on that. But I think the important part of this week’s two-minute drill is that you have to go there with people, and most importantly, you have to go there for yourself because otherwise, there’s so much cognitive dissonance that takes place.

It really hurts your soul. So go there. That’s this week’s two-minute drill. You guys have a great week. Talk to you all next week.

TMD: NO Paella for YOU

Two Minute Drill: NO Paella for YOU

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is kindness and persistence. I am in Valencia, Spain right now. A fun fact about Valencia, Spain, is that it’s the birthplace of Paella. I don’t remember ever having Paella before because I’m not a fan of a bunch of stuff on a plate together; I’m a food separator.

Kindness and Persistence

My hotel told me to go to this place called Casa Carmella, which is down by the beach. I went there yesterday at one o’clock, wanting to have some paella. They were like, NO, and I was like, huh? They said, “No, we have no room for you!” The guy outside said, no room. I asked, “when can I eat?” He told me to come back at 3:30 that day.

I sat outside waiting for someone to bring me at least some water or a beer, but nothing! About 10 minutes went by. I walked inside and explained to the hostess, “Hola, I’d like to have some Paella or some food and I was told I could come back at 3:30.” I was literally talking this fast to her in English, and she said, “Nomas”, giving me the hand. She didn’t want to have anything to do with me.

So, I stood there, and she went and got one of her colleagues who spoke English. I explained the situation, “I was told I could come back at 3:30. I just want to make sure I have a spot.” I was being very nice and polite, and I apologized to the hostess.

The hostess told me I could sit at the bar, but they don’t allow paella at the bar. No soup for you, no paella for you at the bar. I was hungry and wanted to eat. I sat at the bar. It looked like a nice restaurant, and I figured I’d have a good meal.

A nice woman from Madrid sat down next to me eventually. She ordered not the paella, but what they called “soupy rice”. It was like paella, rice, seafood, and all this other stuff, all mixed together.

She was very nice. I looked at her food and she looked at me. She asked if I wanted some, and I said, “Si?” She gave me some of her paella. So, I had paella in Valencia.

The moral of the story is, I was just being as nice as I could to the hostesses, who were really the gatekeepers about whether or not I could eat anything. They let me sit at the bar and I was able to eat some Paella in Valencia.

When you’re running into some challenges with people, just be nice. Put a smile on your face, be persistent when you really want something, and hopefully, you’ll get your paella.

That’s my fun story from Valencia. You guys have a great week and I’ll talk to y’all next week.

TMD: My Most Memorable Experience in Paris

Two Minute Drill: My Most Memorable Experience in Paris

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is “Paris”. I am in the Law Defense District of Paris; I was asked to speak at the International Chiropractic Sports Federation event here this weekend. It was awesome, I had great feedback, and it was a great audience.

Paris

I was also awarded for my work on the World Olympian Scholarship Program, which was rewarding, and I was honored to get that award.

I had a great time with friends, people I haven’t seen maybe in four years since Berlin. Some people I hadn’t seen in over a decade, but it was just like I had seen them yesterday, which is great. The international sports chiropractors’ community is just a wonderful, fantastic group of people who are creating a great impact in the world.

Maybe one of the most memorable experiences here in Paris is, I was going to dinner the first night, riding down the escalator, hearing some man screaming behind me and not knowing because I’m only speaking two words in French Merci and Bonjour cause that’s the only words I know.

The man was speaking French kind of loudly and not sure what was going on. All of a sudden, I get punched in the back, and I’m dumbfounded I realize that he was screaming at me because he wanted me to move from the left side of the escalator to the right side because apparently, he didn’t want to go around me. Then when he walked past me, I realized that the poor guy only had one arm.

So, no wonder he’s angry! So, the lesson learned for this week, guys, is if you’ve got folks screaming and yelling in public places, it may be a good idea to avoid them. That was my lesson learned this week in Paris.

I had a great time, was able to reconnect with friends, which was awesome, and got punched in the back by a one-arm dude.

So, there you go. That’s my Paris story. Next, I’ll be in Barcelona and I’ll be sending you my TMD from there.

You guys have a great week. We’ll talk to you all next week.

TMD: Research, Play, and Monetize

Two Minute Drill: Research, Play, and Monetize

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is RPM. R stands for research. P stands for play, and M stands for monetize. RPM, around what? RPM, around AI, around Artificial Intelligence. We’ve obviously been hearing so much about AI and all these tools like ChatGPT, and it’s important that we actually get in the game.

Leveraging AI

Let’s start with R. How do we research some of these tools? There’s a great site called futurepedia.io, It is basically a catalog of a multitude of artificial intelligence tools and sites that exist to help us in our businesses and in our lives.

P, once we’ve researched these sites, we can just play. Go to these sites, type in prompts, and think about questions that you want answered, whether it’s personal questions or business questions. Be as creative as you can be. Just try it, do stuff, play like you’re a kid with these tools, and see what comes out.

Then lastly, M identifies ways to monetize. Maybe it’s about creating a blog, finding the best ad copy for a social media ad, and creating content for a newsletter that then refers that potential patient or customer to a landing page. There are ways to leverage these tools so that you can actually monetize what you’re creating.

Artificial intelligence is just a tool. It’s a tool that can be used to leverage your creativity exponentially, advance your creativity, and ultimately create huge dividends for your practice and your life.

Research, Play, Monetize. That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill.

You guys have a great week and I’ll talk to y’all next week.

TMD: Goal Attainment: Three Essential Questions for Success

Two Minute Drill: Goal Attainment –  Three Essential Questions for Success

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is all about goal attainment. So, I have three questions that I want you to ask yourself. The first question is, “Am I reviewing my goals at the beginning of the year? Am I doing at least one thing every single day? If I’m running into obstacles doing that one thing, what must I do to overcome that challenge or obstacle in order to ensure that I can complete that one thing?”

Goal Achievement

The first question is, “Am I reviewing the goals that I set at the beginning of the year? Am I reviewing those goals on a regular basis?” And if the answer is no, what can I do to start reviewing those goals on a regular basis? What prompt must I set for myself, a calendar invite, a recurring task, or a recurring email, to ensure that I’m reviewing my goals regularly?

Secondly, am I doing at least one thing every single day? At least one thing every single day that’s moving me closer to achieving that goal? One thing, at least one thing.

Thirdly, if I’m running into obstacles doing that one thing, what must I do to overcome that challenge or obstacle in order to ensure that I can complete that one thing? In order to get closer to my goal this year, more than ever, I’ve been much better at reviewing my goals on a regular basis and asking myself these questions.

And most importantly, the question is, “Am I doing something every day to get closer to achieving the goal I set for myself at the beginning of the year?” And I’m not talking about the normal KPIs that we experience, that we look at every single day in our businesses, right? I’m not talking about those types of goals.

I’m talking about the bigger, longer-term strategic goals that we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year, where we want to be in this place by the end of this year, whether it’s personal or professional.

So, make sure that you’re reviewing your goals on a regular basis. Weekly is ideal. Secondly, ensure that you’re reminding yourself every single day to do something, at least one thing, that’s going to get you much closer to that goal. Thirdly, if you’re running into obstacles doing that one thing, figure out how to overcome that challenge.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. You guys have a great week, and I’ll talk to y’all next week.
