Two Minute Drill: Competitive Stamina

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. It’s football season, we are back! We had a couple of pre-season pro games, we have got Cal Football right around the corner, and I’m getting into all the hype, which brings today’s topic of conversation, competitive stamina.

Have Competitive Stamina

I recently watched coach Ryan Day, the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, talking about the importance of teaching his team, competitive stamina, staying in the game, mentally, staying in the game, physically, and being tough, mentally being tough physically.

We as business owners can learn from that. We have challenges every single day in running our companies. The idea that we can stay competitive and have that stamina, that grit, and that perseverance is important to our success.

How do we build that competitive stamina? first and foremost, it’s about having the right mindset, staying positive, and facing the brutal facts so when things don’t go well, you acknowledge them and know that you can take steps to fix those issues. You can also learn from those mistakes and the fixes that you implemented in order to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. It is also really important that we teach our team competitive stamina, It’s not just about us as business leaders and owners, but we want to be able to teach our team the same thing.

If you want to be in the hall of fame like Walter Payton, or Jerry Rice, two of the best NFL players of all time, have competitive stamina.

I am also super excited about FCA this week! We’re bringing three new and exciting events this year. Click here to learn more about what’s happening at FCA!

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. I’ll see you all next week.

Two Minute Drill: Gratitude & Charity

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. I’ve been having several conversations with loved ones and friends and family members about gratitude this past week. I even had experiences where I felt a deeper level of gratitude. This brings today’s topic of conversation, gratitude and charity.

Lend a Helping Hand

I had those deeper levels of gratitude when I saw people who were less fortunate than me, the guy on the street who was hungry and thirsty and needed some food and some water. Someone at the stoplight who held a sign and was not intrusive and needed a couple of bucks. Helping that man who was hungry and thirsty and helping that guy who needed maybe just a couple of bucks to get his next meal as well I felt a deeper level of gratitude.

I wanted to know what was the connection between gratitude and charity and in fact, having more gratitude, exploring gratitude, and having a journal of gratitude actually changes your ventromedial prefrontal cortex, and helps you be more charitable. I don’t know which is first the chicken to the egg, it was really kind of hard for me to discern, but I will tell you this when I see those who are less fortunate than me and I provide some support, some help, it just gives me a deeper level of gratitude.

I encourage you guys to try that. When you see someone who may be less fortunate, lend a helping hand, and see what you can do to help that person. You will help them and I believe you will help yourself at the same time.

So that’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. I hope you guys have a great week and I’ll see y’all next week.

Two Minute Drill: Auditions

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. I am standing in front of my old high school football field, Winston Churchill high school here in Potomac, Maryland. I was not allowed to play football as a kid #Jewishmother. She would not let me but I love football and I think there’s a great analogy right now as it relates to what’s going on in football and talent management for us as business owners, and today’s topic of conversation is auditioning.

It’s All About the Audition

What happens in football? You have a draft that means you’re bringing in a pool of candidates. Then you have training camp, which is going on right now. Those are the auditions. I want you to think about what are the auditions for you and your practices. How are you making sure that you can understand whether or not that proposed player can make it to your team? They can make it on your team because they have the right values and they have got the right skill sets.

One of the things that I love to do is I will do a series of interviews with myself and with other team members, and then we will do an in-person interview. We will bring them into the clinic, check it out, and then we will ask them to do certain tasks related to their specific job roles.

If we are hiring a marketing person, for instance, we will ask them to build a marketing plan for us. Once we have gotten them into training camp, we have already weeded out people we know we don’t want. Now we have got a few final candidates and we want to see what they can deliver. When they can deliver the goods, that’s when we have a greater level of confidence that we have made a decision to bring on the right person.

I want to encourage you to make your job candidates, make the people that are applying for your roles, go through a rigorous interview process, and conclude with a specific action item that ties directly to a deliverable related to their job. When you do that, you’ll have more confidence in making a decision to not hire them or bring them onto your team and help them build your culture, your practice, and your success.

So, it’s all about the audition.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill, have a great week guys.

And I will see you all tomorrow at 2 PM for our Facebook Live. On the Menu: FCA.

Two Minute Drill: Diversity of Thought

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today I am coming to you from Santa Fe, New Mexico. I am here at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa. This is my second chiropractic entrepreneur event in the last week, and today’s topic of conversation is diversity of thought.

How Diversity of Thought Matters

Both experiences have been just truly remarkable. What I love about these two events is that I was able to learn from a wide variety of different people and learn a wide variety of things. Everything from philosophy to clinical excellence, to business strategies, helps us get through what everybody’s predicting to be the recession. I will share some of those with you at a later time. However, the most important thing for me to deliver this week is to reemphasize the point of how the diversity of thought matters. It exposes your brain and your thought processes to new ideas that can help you solve problems and be happier in life.

Shane Snow and his book, Dream Teams talked about cognitive diversity. You want diverse thoughts and opinions on your team to deliver the best outcome as long as the core values align with the group. What was interesting these past two weekends is that while there were lots of different discussions and maybe different areas of the chiropractic profession, one thing was obvious, clinical excellence, delivering value and impact for the patients and the communities that we serve was clearly at the center of the core values of these discussions.

I encourage you to get exposed to groups, get exposed to a wide variety of thinkers in the profession and outside the profession, and use that knowledge and wisdom to help improve your practice and your lives.

So that’s this week, Two Minute Drill, coming to you from Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Hope to see you all this Thursday at 7 PM on Facebook Live for the Happy Hour with Jen Porro. We will discuss FCA, answer all your questions, and have fun.

Two Minute Drill: Community

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. I’m here in beautiful and sunny Sarasota, Florida for Kevin Christie’s Modern Chiropractic Marketing Mastermind session. We’ve got about 14 folks in the room and it has just been remarkable. This brings today’s topic of conversation, community.

Build Your Aligned Community

My message to you all today is to build your aligned Community. The people that align with you and your core values. Today, at Kevin Christie’s session, there are three things that come to mind for me that I wanted to share with you guys.

First, I’m learning things that I never knew before. I have been around for a long time and these doctors are sharing their ideas and their successes. This is just going to help me be more successful in my businesses, help our patients be more successful, and our customers to be more successful.

Secondarily, I’m being reminded of the things that I should be doing and that I haven’t done, or a project that I knew was important, but I didn’t get done. I’m just being reminded of these things that are also important. It’s always a tradeoff. There’s always a lot to do. Just, reemphasizing to me, the things that I’ve known in the past that I really want to get done, and I’m just going to be that much more motivated to get it done.

Lastly, the joy and the pleasure of strengthening relationships. Some of these guys, I know some of these guys I’m meeting for the first time, but the opportunity to share with them and create value for them from me is something that really makes me happy. Also being able to learn from these people now and in the future is just going to help improve my life, help improve the life of my team, and all of the customers and patients that we serve.

Community guys! If you’re not in a mastermind session, get into one. If you want to learn more about it, just reach out to me.

That’s this week’s two-minute drill.

You guys have a great week. I’ll talk to y’all next week.

TMD: Celebration

Two Minute Drill: Celebration

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. This past Friday, we took our team out to a baseball game, the Nationals against the Braves. While the Nats are a terrible baseball team right now, it was still a lot of fun to get everybody together and just celebrate the successes that we’ve had individually and collectively. This brings this week’s topic of conversation, celebration.

Celebrate Your Tiny Successes

Celebration is a really important thing. I think it’s even more important when things are not going as well as you’d like them to. It provides a level of appreciation and motivation that I think can make a huge difference for you and your team.

Behavioral psychologist, BJ Fogg wrote the book, Tiny Habits. In that book, here’s what he says about celebration “When you celebrate effectively, you tap into the reward circuitry of your brain. By feeling good at the right moment, you cause your brain to recognize and encode the sequence of behaviors you just performed” In other words, you could hack your brain to create a habit by celebrating and self-reinforcing. He goes on to say, “Celebration will one day be ranked alongside mindfulness and gratitude as daily practices that contribute most to our overall happiness and well-being. If you learn just one thing from my entire book, I hope it’s this: Celebrate your tiny successes. This one small shift in your life can have a massive impact even when you feel there is no way up or out of your situation. Celebration can be your lifeline.”

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. I am celebrating my new weed-free garden where I did not literally pick one weed. I’m celebrating, even though one of my puppies, just put dirt in the yard, but it’s fine. It’s all good. I’m celebrating a clean and beautiful backyard.

Find those successes and celebrate with you and your team.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. Have a great week.
