TMD: Death Vs Life

Two Minute Drill: Death Vs Life

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today I’m coming to you from San Antonio, Texas. I was here this weekend for a conference. This week’s TMD topic of conversation is “death”.

Appreciate What You Have

Two experiences this weekend, the first one is a good friend of mine lost his nephew, a 25-year-old kid who died in his sleep. Not had some health issues, but 25-year-old boy, gone forever from the planet.

Then, I was scrolling through my social media feed and I saw a gentleman hugging his elderly mom and what looked to be a hospital bed. It was probably her final moments. Those things hit me hard and got me thinking about how fast life is going and how precious life is.

I know we hear it all the time, and we say it all the time, but are we really paying attention? Are we really internalizing the fact that our time is so limited and our time is so precious here that we’re actually making the most of the time that we have on Earth?

First, I’m going to ask everyone who’s reading this to really appreciate the things that they have in life. The second thing I’m going to ask you to do is to think about what’s really important to you and what matters in your life. The third thing I’m going to ask you to do is to go after it and go after it hard. If it’s really important, it’s worth it. Go through the trials and tribulations, go through the challenge, and go hard. Ultimately at the end of the day, you can at least say that you went for it.

So, death and life. That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. You guys have a great week.

Be safe and appreciate what you have. Talk to you all soon.

TMD: Happy Anniversary Kaizenovators

Two Minute Drill: Happy Anniversary Kaizenovators

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of your conversation is Happy Anniversary. On April 14th, in just a few days, it will be the fourth anniversary of Kaizenovate. It just got me thinking about what happened over the last four years. Five years ago, if somebody said you’d be the CEO of a technology startup, I would’ve been like, what are you smoking?

Our Fourth Anniversary

Here we are four years later, and I’m proud of three things. The first thing that I’m proud of is that we’re still here. We’ve survived! Some other companies have kind of been in our space that have not survived. Just surviving itself is a win.

The second thing I’m proud of is the service my team provides. They are just remarkable. We get a lot of feedback on just how great my people are. The service they provide, this technology, sometimes shit goes awry and my team always steps up and does whatever we can to make it right, and so I’m really proud of that.

The third thing that I’m proud of is our evolution. We were not stagnant and we are never going to be stagnant in the spirit of our name, Kaizenovate. It’s all about continuous improvement through innovation. We’ve invested a lot of time, money, blood, sweat, tears, and stress. Reinvested into continuing to iterate and evolve our platform so that we can create a really substantial impact in the world.

I’m really excited about that and that’s what really keeps me going because it’s a grind and it is difficult and it is stressful, but I work with amazing people and that’s what makes it all worthwhile, the impact and the people.

IT’S OUR FOUR-YEAR ANNIVERSARY, ON APRIL 14TH.

Thank you to all of our customers who have been on this journey with us, you make it all worthwhile, you’re the best, we love working with you guys, and we’re looking forward to more impact and more fun together as time goes on.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY EVERYBODY!

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. You all have a great week.

TMD: Victim or Victor

Two Minute Drill: Victim or Victor

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is being the victim or the victor. Several weeks ago, I was having a conversation with my sister, Efrat, and she told me this story about her daughter, my baby niece, Malka. Malka was having a bit of a tough go of it that day and my sister turned to Malka and said, “Are you going to be the victim or the victor?”

The Stoic Happiness Triangle

My very smart baby niece said, “I’m going to be the victor”. My sister was like, that’s right Malka, you’re going to be the victor. It got me thinking about how we can change the scenarios in our lives, or our mindset, or our circumstances, and go from being the victim, to the victor, and so it automatically brought me to the Stoic Happiness Triangle.

The Stoic Happiness Triangle has three components. The first component is live with Areté, the Greek word meaning excellence or virtue. Do what we can every day to be the best version of ourselves every minute, every hour, every day.

The second part of the Stoic Happiness Triangle is focusing on what we can control, and we can either react or we can respond. We can take a deep breath, take a step back and realize, let’s not let the story that we’re telling ourselves get in the way of solving the problem.

Lastly, it’s about taking responsibility. It is about responding. It is about taking responsibility for the things that we do have control over and doing it with Areté, responding with virtue, with excellence.

Whenever we feel like we’re the victim, let’s leave that emotion behind and focus on the Stoic Happiness Triangle and be the victor.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill.

You guys have a great week and I’ll talk to you all next week.

Why LEVELING UP is a skill most chiropractors never learn… And what you can do about it

Why LEVELING UP is a skill most chiropractors never learn… And what you can do about it

In chiropractic school, we learn how to help patients achieve health and well-being naturally and holistically. What a GIFT! We create miracles every day in our practices. And, as years of practice accumulate, and with additional clinical training, we add more tools to our clinical toolbox to level up and help even more people. But what about running the business? What about pushing through a perceived or real ceiling for our practice? Why are SO many chiropractors stuck and can’t get to their next level of genius? The answer is many times a lack of knowledge. Chiropractors stuck at the same level don’t even know what they don’t know. It’s called the Dunning-Kreuger effect.

They are stuck in the peak of “Mount Stupid” (high confidence, low competence) or the “Valley of Despair” (low confidence, low competence). My goal is to guide you along your journey up the slope of enlightenment by sharing the key constructs of breaking through the ceiling and leveling up. Here’s where it starts:

➡️ ACCELERATE YOUR LEADERSHIP SKILLS

➡️ BUILD AND RETAIN YOUR DREAM TEAM

➡️ DIFFERENTIATE TO OWN MARKET SHARE

➡️ EXCEL AT PATIENT RETENTION

➡️ BE A FREAK ABOUT COMPLIANCE

➡️ KEEP PACE WITH (AND PREFERABLY CONTRIBUTE TO) INNOVATION

ACCELERATE YOUR LEADERSHIP SKILLS

Nothing is harder than leading a team of people to a BIG vision. It starts with you, the leader. The business science says one of the most important traits of being a great leader is self-awareness.  We must understand how to leverage our strengths and account for our weaknesses. Utilizing validated personality tests and strength assessments in regular intervals will provide insights as to who you are, what you believe, and how you behave – a critical element of your core value’s DNA. Moreover, benchmarking your scores on assessments like Angela Duckworth’s Grit Scale® will provide a great benchmark upon which to improve.

Another critical step in evolving your leadership skills is performing regular 360s. You want to have your team evaluate YOUR performance. Yes, that’s what I said. It will help you to uncover blind spots that are holding you, your team, and your practice back.  It can be a painful exercise, but the gain is worth the pain.

BUILD AND RETAIN YOUR DREAM TEAM

I read Jim Collins’ book, Good to Great, many years ago. But one of the main lessons that have stayed with me is “First Who, Then What.”  It’s so damn true. You can have the most amazing idea, product, service, strategy, etc., but none of it matters unless you have the right people to make it all happen.

So have the right people, in the right seat, doing the right work, at the right time, the right way. Where does all of this begin? A smart recruiting strategy that focuses on finding individuals that align with your core values. Doing behavioral-based interviewing, personality/strength assessments, engaging onboarding, and continuous training and development all increase the probability of building a winning culture that can be tenacious in tough times and explosive in great times.

DIFFERENTIATE TO OWN MARKET SHARE

No alt text provided for this image

Musculoskeletal conditions continue to be the top cause of disability worldwide, so there is no shortage of potential new patients. What there is a shortage of is leaders who work every day to identify and hone their zone of practice genius that is like no other healthcare provider.

Seth Godin, arguably the world’s best marketing expert stated, “The only way to be indispensable is to be different.” If your practice is gone tomorrow, and someone else can fill your role, you have not properly differentiated. Hitting that ceiling of growth? Find innovation and breakthrough!

EXCEL AT PATIENT RETENTION

There’s only one thing worse than not being able to acquire new patients…not being able to keep them. The business case is obvious, but it goes even deeper. Patients who don’t complete care plans may have their issues come back, and those are the patients who can ultimately kill your brand… “They didn’t help me.” It doesn’t matter that they stopped too soon, and didn’t adhere appropriately. They believe their poor outcome is YOUR fault, and their perception affects your reality.

Patient education alone is not enough to drive retention to a prescribed care plan. It’s about building trust and meeting patients where they are. The most successful practices build strong and deep relationships with their patients AND create remarkable experiences both offline and ONLINE. Digital experiences are not the future. Patients are expecting a digital experience with their doctor now, and those who fill this need are the ones who break through and level up.

BE A FREAK ABOUT COMPLIANCE

No alt text provided for this image

HIPAA, OSHA, CEU’s…I mean how many more acronyms do we need?!? The bottom line, it’s probably the least fun part of our careers, but it’s a requirement, so suck it up cupcake. Building simple and effective processes to train your team on these critical responsibilities may not grow our practices, but it certainly ensures that we aren’t fined by the regulators and end up in jail, or worse, in front of our regulatory boards!

And guess who else wants your money? Insurance companies have line items on their P&L’s for provider recoupments. If you don’t have your documentation in order, sooner or later you will pay the piper. Doing voluntary coding and documentation audits helps you to identify your weak points, and shore them up. Do it now, because if you don’t, the price to pay can put you out of business.

KEEP PACE WITH (AND PREFERABLY CONTRIBUTE TO) INNOVATION

Kaizenovate! Yes, that’s what I said. Make a conscious decision to continuously improve and innovate. It could be in one big step, or it could be 20 little steps, but staying stagnant is the surest possible way to never being able to level up and build the practice and life you want and deserve.

No alt text provided for this image

When you take a step back, look around, and connect with patients in a human-centered way to identify what they need and value, opportunities to innovate value are endless. New CPT codes are created every year, and with the rise of digital health, there are REAL opportunities for healthcare professionals to create exponential value and get paid appropriately for it. Early adopters will be the winners in this game, and so will their patients.

TMD: Disagree AND Commit

Two Minute Drill: Disagree and Commit

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is to disagree and commit. I was having a conversation with our awesome advisor, Rob, last week and we were talking about process and how to expedite the process. Someone on the development team wanted to change our process a bit and Rob said “I disagree, but I commit”.

“I told you so”

In other words, I don’t necessarily agree with this particular step that we’re taking, but I’m going to commit to doing everything I can to make sure that it works to the development team’s desires.

I thought that was just such a great comment. Too often I’ve had people on my team in my past where people have disagreed and not really committed, saw something fail, and then gave me, “I told you so” at the end.

When people can disagree and commit, it’s a great thing. It’s a great leadership quality, it’s a great human quality. We want that out of our leaders and we want that out of the people on our team.

Sometimes people who are on the front lines making the decisions, doing the things that need to get done, if they make a decision to do something a bit different than what leadership maybe has set out, as leaders, we just have to buy into it and say, “Okay, if you’re on the front lines, you know what’s going on, I understand. I don’t necessarily agree that this is the right tactic, I would do it this way. But if you want to take these steps, I disagree, but I’m going to commit to making sure I do everything possible to see us be successful”.

I think it’s a great lesson learned. I think there are too many leaders in too many positions who either just don’t let people try things and therefore it decreases engagement, or if they do let people try things, they’re waiting in the back wings to give you “and I told you so”, and there’s nothing really good about that.

Sometimes we got to let people on the team make decisions. Even if we disagree, we voice our concerns. We try and overcome any challenges with those concerns, but ultimately, at the end of the day, great leaders commit to ensuring the success of the individual, the team, and the goals.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill.

See you all next week.

TMD: What’s the lesson behind this?

Two Minute Drill: What’s the Lesson Behind This?

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is dogs, onions and lessons to be learned. Last night I went out to a local restaurant, did some work for a few hours, and came back and saw my dogs. I walked inside after getting some love from them and I looked down at the dog bed and I saw a shredded plastic bag and remnants of an onion skin.

Dogs, onions, and lessons to be learned

I remembered that I had left my onion on the countertop in the corner of my kitchen, and suddenly that onion was gone. I immediately panicked. I didn’t know what to do. I Googled immediately “are onions harmful to dogs?” They’re incredibly toxic.

If there’s too much, it creates hemolysis. It’s the destruction of the red blood cells and what happens is the dogs can have anemia and ultimately die.

I put them in my car, took them to the vet, and called poison control. Three and a half hours later, they were able to induce vomiting and they were sent home. The instructions were just to go home, monitor them, and make sure they don’t show signs of anemia, which I understood.

I got home and I was like, I don’t understand, what happened. I’m looking around the dog bed, and around the rest of the house, and all of a sudden, I turn to the left and I see that they never ate the onion. They just played with the onion and it just rolled into the corner.

I took them to the vet, they were made to throw up, and they never ate the onion. I was both frustrated as well as relieved because I knew that, they both going to be okay.

At the end of the day, I asked myself, what’s the lesson to be learned from this? And I still haven’t figured it out.

Obviously, don’t leave food out on the counter, especially if you have dogs around. Lesson learned but, there’s got to be another lesson to be learned from all this, and I just haven’t figured it out.

So, I’m going to ask you guys what’s the lesson to be learned? I don’t have all the wisdom in the world. I would love to hear what you guys think. Let me know in the comments and share the lesson learned.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. You guys have a great week. Talk to you all next week.

TMD: Doing the Hard Sh*t

Two Minute Drill: Doing the Hard Sh*t

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is doing the hard sh*t. This weekend, I am in Pinehurst, NC speaking at the North Carolina Chiropractic Association. I was on a call Friday morning with our tech team and our advisor, Rob, said something about doing the hard sh*t and I got really excited.

Three reasons why doing the hard Sh*t is important

Why do I get excited about doing the hard sh*t? Why is doing the hard sh*t really important?

I believe there are three reasons why. First of all, if you’re doing the hard sh*t, you’re probably doing something that’s really important in the world. You’re probably doing something to create an impact either personally or professionally.

Two, doing the hard sh*t probably means you’re going to fail more often than you are going to succeed, especially in the beginning. But failure is a great way to learn. I’ve learned so much through all of my failures. I’ve taken some big risks. I have failed a lot, but I have also learned a lot along the way.

Third Once we are able to complete the hard sh*t, that gives us confidence. It tells us, you know what? We can overcome these failures. We can learn and we can ultimately succeed, which then gives us more confidence to try harder sh*t.

Go out there and do the hard sh*t. Just try it and if you stumble along the way, pick yourself up and just try again.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill.

Try the hard sh*t and I’ll talk to you all next week.

TMD: Wednesday’s Workaround

Two Minute Drill: Wednesday’s Workaround

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy NOT Tuesday Two Minute Drill but Wednesday’s workaround. Yesterday I missed my TMD and I woke up to a text this morning from one of my best friends, Stewart, who said, “Hey man don’t worry about it. You know you missed your TMD, but you know it’s not a big deal. It’s not a failure, you just prioritize other things in your life that day, and sometimes that happens.”

I missed my TMD

I usually hate workarounds. I really do! I want problems to be solved but sometimes we do need to find ways to get stuff done that’s not perfect or ideal. It’s progress, not perfection at times.

Why do we need workarounds, to begin with? For me, my schedule is crazy busy. I’m overcommitted. What am I going to do to solve that problem so that I don’t miss my TMDs?

One thing is organizing my schedule in a more efficient way. Another way to make sure that I’m not overcommitted by saying NO. If I happen to say no to you in the future, it’s only because I don’t want to disappoint you, and miss the mark like I did yesterday with my TMD.

When it comes to workarounds, sometimes they’re necessary. Sometimes we have to get them done.

Find out why you need the workaround, and then work to ensure that you don’t need future workarounds in your business and in your life.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill.

Have a great week, you guys.
