What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill! Since yesterday we celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday, today’s topic of conversation is all about bravery.
Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday
So, this is really fitting because yesterday we celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday as a national holiday. Fun fact, his birthday is actually January the 15th, however, we celebrated it yesterday.
For me, Dr. Martin Luther King exemplifies bravery. He literally risked his life for the cause of equality, civil rights, and justice. Now, while we are clearly not nearly as far along as a society and humanity as we should be, hopefully, one day we will be, Dr. Martin Luther King is the anchor of that movement of equality, justice, and civil rights. To be that anchor it requires a tremendous amount of bravery. To be that brave, you also have to know the flip side of that coin, which is fear. To be able to overcome that fear mentally, emotionally, physically and show the bravery and the courage that he showed to move the cause forward, is truly remarkable.
It’s really interesting because at least for me, sometimes, we demonstrate bravery and we don’t even know where it comes from. We just somehow react or don’t think, and we do things that are brave. Sometimes, I know there are opportunities where I can be braver and I’m not. This two-minute drill got me thinking about being more aware of those opportunities and finding ways to be braver in my professional life and my personal life. So, this week I’m going to look for those opportunities to overcome my fears and become braver and I would love for you to do the same.
So that’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. Let’s go out there and be brave.
Head over to our Facebook page and let us know how do you overcome your fears and become braver?

What’s up Kaizenovators! It’s week two of 2022 and this week’s topic of conversation is about transitioning from Boss to Coach. Check out this week’s Two Minute Drill to hear what my inspiration for this week’s topic was.
Am I a boss, or am I a coach?
My buddy Larry Fundler, who was a guest on one of my two-minute drills, sent me an email because he just listened to a program that was delivered to him at his company. He took some notes and sent them to me and I love them!
Here are some notes:
A boss leads by directing, by focusing on tasks and outcomes by seldom asking questions, and generally hears but doesn’t really listen.
A coach leads by having open discussions and asking questions by individualizing leadership, focusing on the performance and growth of the employee, and by listening to understand. Employees want to be coached. Employees crave ongoing feedback and communication to be held accountable. They respond positively to transparency from leadership and have the opportunity to learn and grow.
I thought those notes were fantastic. I’ve been in several conversations recently with different practice owners and it’s interesting to hear how different owners respond to different stresses that exist in their world. Some respond more like boss’s, authoritarian, and some really understand the nuances of being a great leader, which ultimately means being a great coach. So, this week, I want you to ask yourself that question: Am I a boss, or am I a coach?
If you’re leaning more towards the coaching side, I would say that you probably have a great advantage over just being someone who is a boss.
Lastly, it is my boy Larry’s birthday today, please give him a shout-out and wish him a happy birthday.

In this week’s TMD I am coming to you from Pensacola Beach, Florida. Since I am taping on New Year’s Day, today’s topic of conversation is about setting 2022 goals.
Clarity Equals Success!
I have to admit that I am not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. I am a big fan of setting written goals.
The way we like to do it at Kaizo and Kaizenovate is to set the goal, the big audacious goal, and break it down into quarterly rocks. So, every 90 days we build towards that goal we want to achieve for the year.
Within those 90-day rocks ask three to five HOWs. For instance, if we want to increase our new patients at Kaizo by 20%, howare we going to do that? The answer may be, I am going to build a sales and marketing strategy. And howare you going to do that? I am going to set up a meeting with my team and ask everybody to bring their best three ideas to build the sales and marketing strategy to increase new patients by 20%.
I just asked HOW a few times but you can drill even deeper. When your team gets together and you set your goals for 2022, make sure that you ask them, they ask themselves, and you ask yourself the three to five HOWs. When you do that, you will get very clear on howyou are going to accomplish a goal. Clarity equals success!
It’s going to be a great year!

This week I am coming to you from Huntington Beach, California. I was here this weekend because we were celebrating my father’s 90th birthday. And so, today’s topic of conversation is about recognition.
Recognizing him! Appreciating him!
We were in Huntington Beach, California this weekend. It was great. We celebrated our father’s 90th birthday. We had a great birthday dinner and got to spend a lot of quality time with him. One of the best memories of this weekend was being able to sit at the dinner table and everybody going around the table and just recognizing him, appreciating him for the great man that he is.
I really wanted to focus on one thing, his inner strength! The man has tremendous inner strength. He survived esophageal cancer, not many people do that, he survived prostate cancer, and he survived COVID at 89, almost 90 years old. I wanted to look him in the eye and recognize him and tell him how much I appreciated that about him, and what a great example it sets currently and will set for the rest of my life. It was a great moment. I’ll never forget it. I’ll also never forget the other great things that were said about him around that table.
In fact, the theme around today is recognition. We’re in the holiday season, let’s make sure that we recognize the ones that we love, and also at work, it’s really important to recognize the great teams that we have, the great people that we have who help us move our mission and our vision forward.
What’s really interesting is what are the most important questions on an employee engagement survey? The really most validated employee engagement survey is called the Q12. The question is, I have received recognition from my boss in the last seven days. So, if you haven’t appreciated someone in the last seven days, either in your personal life or in your professional life, do it! It will make them feel good. It will make you feel good and you will just live a healthier, happier life that way. So, the theme this week is all about recognition.
Enjoy the holidays, Merry Christmas, happy holidays.

Two Minute Drill: I Let My Emotions Get The Best of Me
Today’s topic of conversation is fallibility, self-awareness, and vulnerability. So Friday I had kind of a rough day. Listen to this week’s Two Minute Drill to hear what happened, how I handled it, and what I learned.
Fallibility, self-awareness, and vulnerability
So Friday I had kind of a rough day. I had a fair number of things that were not going the way I would like them to go. Toward the end of the day, an email came across my desk and I reached out to one of my leaders and I was definitely not my best self. I let my emotions get the best of me and I was fallible.
I didn’t handle the conversation well at all.
The self-awareness came in the middle of the conversation where I realized I am not doing a very good job and because I’m not doing a very good job, I can’t really help my leader very well. And so, I became self-aware and at that point, I did end up apologizing. I think that was positive because this person understood that I recognized I wasn’t being my best self and at the same time I still felt bad even after the conversation.
So, what is the one thing I can do moving forward to make sure that I don’t go down that road again? The main thing is to make sure that I don’t act immediately. My tendency is to do that, and I’ve been fairly good over the years at preventing that from happening but on Friday when all the sh*t was hitting the fan I just didn’t do it very well.
So, I think when it comes to any help this can provide you, I would say make yourself aware of those times when you react in not the best way. Find ways to be more aware of them and then if you need to, say you’re sorry because people for the most part (even though sometimes they won’t forget) they will forgive.
So fallibility, self-awareness, and vulnerability, that’s the message for today’s TMD. I’m going to work on being a better person and a better leader this week. What are you going to work on this week? Head over to our Facebook page and let us know.
