TMD: Lesson Learned on the Big Island

TMD: Lesson Learned on the Big Island

Two Minute Drill: Lesson Learned on the Big Island

Today, I’m coming to you from the Big Island in Hawaii. It’s truly fantastic and so beautiful here. I am fortunate and grateful to be here for all our chiropractic events this week. I arrived on Wednesday, and I hadn’t showered for a couple of days because I went to the ocean and was hanging out with friends, thinking, “Whatever.”

The Power of Patience

I was staying at a hotel where the ChiroCongress, Clinical Compass, summit meetings, and the Future of Chiropractic Strategic Planning Meeting were held. I was excited to take a nice hot shower.

So, I get into the shower, turn the knob, but there’s no hot water. I wait and wait, still no hot water. I even tried turning it the other way, just in case, but it only got colder, so I quickly turned it back and ended up taking a cold shower.

I went down to the front desk and asked for someone to come and fix the shower so I could enjoy a hot one.

They sent someone to my room, and I received a text from the hotel stating it was fixed.

Eager for a hot shower before my night out with friends, I went into the bathroom. And this is what they did to fix the show

So, what happened?

Well, I was very impatient…

Feeling the immediate cold water, I thought it must be wrong and turned it back, not knowing which way was hot or cold on the shower knob.

All this made me realize the lesson here is about patience.

I’ll never forget, in chiropractic school, the dean of students telling me, “Listen, I know you’re struggling, but you have to be patient. Not everything will happen when and how you want it. Just stay focused on the process and the inputs, and ultimately you will achieve your goal.”

Achieving the goal of taking a hot shower wasn’t in the cards for me those couple of times because I wasn’t patient enough to turn the knob the other way and wait to see what would happen.

The lesson for me, and perhaps for some of you, is when trying things, exercise a bit of patience. Sometimes, wait a little longer to see if the decision you’re making is the right one.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill.

I’ll talk to you all soon.

Have a great week.

TMD: A Modern Take on Ancient Hawaiian Leadership

Two Minute Drill: A Modern Take on Ancient Hawaiian Leadership

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today I’m coming to you from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, with some historical sites right behind me, including King Kamehameha’s residence. He ruled the Hawaiian Islands from 1792 through 1819 and was recognized as a great leader. A key aspect of his leadership was his tremendous vision.

Leadership Lessons in Kailua-Kona

King Kamehameha understood that unifying the Hawaiian Islands would present a smaller threat from external forces, thus ensuring that the Hawaiian people were safer and less prone to conquest by others.

Kamehameha was also known for embracing innovation and technology. A skilled military tactician, he successfully united the Hawaiian Islands and defended against threats using the conventional military tools of his era.

Also, as new technologies such as firearms emerged, he incorporated them to maintain the safety of his people.

His capabilities extended beyond warfare to diplomacy. Kamehameha brought former enemies into his political circle, giving them positions of power, which helped create political stability.

These elements of his rule make me reflect on how we handle competition in our own businesses. Perhaps we can all find ways to collaborate more effectively. ‘Co-opetition’—combining competition with cooperation—might be beneficial in many contexts.

I am coming to you from Kailua-Kona and hope you guys enjoyed this Two Minute Drill.

I’m here attending the ChiroCongress Chiropractic Summit and the Chiropractic Futures meetings.

Have a great week. I’ll talk to you all soon.

That is this week’s Two Minute Drill and I will talk to y’all next week.

TMD: My Most Memorable Experience in Paris

Two Minute Drill: My Most Memorable Experience in Paris

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is “Paris”. I am in the Law Defense District of Paris; I was asked to speak at the International Chiropractic Sports Federation event here this weekend. It was awesome, I had great feedback, and it was a great audience.

Paris

I was also awarded for my work on the World Olympian Scholarship Program, which was rewarding, and I was honored to get that award.

I had a great time with friends, people I haven’t seen maybe in four years since Berlin. Some people I hadn’t seen in over a decade, but it was just like I had seen them yesterday, which is great. The international sports chiropractors’ community is just a wonderful, fantastic group of people who are creating a great impact in the world.

Maybe one of the most memorable experiences here in Paris is, I was going to dinner the first night, riding down the escalator, hearing some man screaming behind me and not knowing because I’m only speaking two words in French Merci and Bonjour cause that’s the only words I know.

The man was speaking French kind of loudly and not sure what was going on. All of a sudden, I get punched in the back, and I’m dumbfounded I realize that he was screaming at me because he wanted me to move from the left side of the escalator to the right side because apparently, he didn’t want to go around me. Then when he walked past me, I realized that the poor guy only had one arm.

So, no wonder he’s angry! So, the lesson learned for this week, guys, is if you’ve got folks screaming and yelling in public places, it may be a good idea to avoid them. That was my lesson learned this week in Paris.

I had a great time, was able to reconnect with friends, which was awesome, and got punched in the back by a one-arm dude.

So, there you go. That’s my Paris story. Next, I’ll be in Barcelona and I’ll be sending you my TMD from there.

You guys have a great week. We’ll talk to you all next week.

TMD: Research, Play, and Monetize

Two Minute Drill: Research, Play, and Monetize

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is RPM. R stands for research. P stands for play, and M stands for monetize. RPM, around what? RPM, around AI, around Artificial Intelligence. We’ve obviously been hearing so much about AI and all these tools like ChatGPT, and it’s important that we actually get in the game.

Leveraging AI

Let’s start with R. How do we research some of these tools? There’s a great site called futurepedia.io, It is basically a catalog of a multitude of artificial intelligence tools and sites that exist to help us in our businesses and in our lives.

P, once we’ve researched these sites, we can just play. Go to these sites, type in prompts, and think about questions that you want answered, whether it’s personal questions or business questions. Be as creative as you can be. Just try it, do stuff, play like you’re a kid with these tools, and see what comes out.

Then lastly, M identifies ways to monetize. Maybe it’s about creating a blog, finding the best ad copy for a social media ad, and creating content for a newsletter that then refers that potential patient or customer to a landing page. There are ways to leverage these tools so that you can actually monetize what you’re creating.

Artificial intelligence is just a tool. It’s a tool that can be used to leverage your creativity exponentially, advance your creativity, and ultimately create huge dividends for your practice and your life.

Research, Play, Monetize. That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill.

You guys have a great week and I’ll talk to y’all next week.

TMD: Goal Attainment: Three Essential Questions for Success

Two Minute Drill: Goal Attainment –  Three Essential Questions for Success

What’s up Kaizenovators, Happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is all about goal attainment. So, I have three questions that I want you to ask yourself. The first question is, “Am I reviewing my goals at the beginning of the year? Am I doing at least one thing every single day? If I’m running into obstacles doing that one thing, what must I do to overcome that challenge or obstacle in order to ensure that I can complete that one thing?”

Goal Achievement

The first question is, “Am I reviewing the goals that I set at the beginning of the year? Am I reviewing those goals on a regular basis?” And if the answer is no, what can I do to start reviewing those goals on a regular basis? What prompt must I set for myself, a calendar invite, a recurring task, or a recurring email, to ensure that I’m reviewing my goals regularly?

Secondly, am I doing at least one thing every single day? At least one thing every single day that’s moving me closer to achieving that goal? One thing, at least one thing.

Thirdly, if I’m running into obstacles doing that one thing, what must I do to overcome that challenge or obstacle in order to ensure that I can complete that one thing? In order to get closer to my goal this year, more than ever, I’ve been much better at reviewing my goals on a regular basis and asking myself these questions.

And most importantly, the question is, “Am I doing something every day to get closer to achieving the goal I set for myself at the beginning of the year?” And I’m not talking about the normal KPIs that we experience, that we look at every single day in our businesses, right? I’m not talking about those types of goals.

I’m talking about the bigger, longer-term strategic goals that we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year, where we want to be in this place by the end of this year, whether it’s personal or professional.

So, make sure that you’re reviewing your goals on a regular basis. Weekly is ideal. Secondly, ensure that you’re reminding yourself every single day to do something, at least one thing, that’s going to get you much closer to that goal. Thirdly, if you’re running into obstacles doing that one thing, figure out how to overcome that challenge.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. You guys have a great week, and I’ll talk to y’all next week.

TMD: The Value of Experimentation

Two Minute Drill: The Value of Experimentation

What’s up Kaizenovators, happy Tuesday Two Minute Drill. Today’s topic of conversation is experimentation. A few weeks ago, I needed to take my little puppy, Hannah, up to the vet. I live in D.C. and had to take her up north to a town called Germantown, which is about an hour away. Unfortunately, it was during rush hour and traffic was really, really bad.

Learning from Experiments

Even though I left really early, it looked like I wasn’t going to get there on time. So, instead of paying attention to what Google Maps was telling me, I decided to experiment. I tried a different route to see if I could “beat the clock”. Well, that experiment failed. It didn’t go very well.

I was significantly later than I probably would’ve been had I just followed Google, but I thought I could outsmart it. Speaking of trying to outsmart the system, this past Sunday I was coming back from Austin at my awesome Ultimate Achievers Club event, and my airline informed us that our plane was delayed because of maintenance.

I’ve had experiences in the past where maintenance sometimes means it gets canceled. So, I decided to move myself to a later flight. I was originally supposed to take off at 11:45. I moved to a later flight that was supposed to take off at around 5:30, thinking at least this flight wouldn’t get canceled. Well, not only did my original flight take off at around five, but my flight that I moved to ended up taking off at around 11:15 at night, and I didn’t get home until about 3:30 in the morning.

What does all this mean? I make bad decisions. I should just go with the flow. I think the lesson I’m learning from all this is that life is just a series of experiments. Sometimes those experiments go well, and sometimes they don’t. The question is, are we learning from those experiments?

I encountered traffic again today. I wanted to get to my Rockville office quickly. It was going to take longer than expected, but I took a different route than what Google told me to take. You know what? I got here at about the same time. Sometimes experiments work, and sometimes they don’t.

The key is, can we learn not only directly from that initial experiment that we’re conducting in front of us, but can we learn from the experiments over time? So, I don’t know if I have an answer for you.

I would love to hear what you guys think. Are you experimenting? Are you trying things? Are you just going with the flow? Because I think there’s a lot of wisdom to be gained here, so I’d love to hear what you guys think. So, experimentation is life.

That’s this week’s Two Minute Drill. You guys, have a great week.
